The estimated population in 2008 was 158,166. Today the incorporated towns are Lexington, Thomasville, Denton, Midway and Wallburg, with the largest towns being Lexington and Thomasville. Site Selection Magazine recently named the Thomasville-Lexington Micropolitan Area as the seventh top economic development performer in the country for 2008.
During the last century, Davidson County was known as a furniture and textile center. Because of the outsourcing of furniture manufacturing, Davidson County has adapted to the changing employment conditions by embracing other avenues for revenue for the county such as racing motor sports, viticulture and tourism. Our low tax base, proximity to interstates, plenty of undeveloped land, and a trained workforce have enticed new industries to the county.
Lexington and Thomasville offer the advantages of small town living with the progressive attitudes and opportunities of more urban areas because of their close proximity to the larger cities of Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro.

This festival attracts thousands of tourists and residents to our county in October each year. For more information visit www.barbequefestival.com.
When you visit the town of Lexington stroll down Main Street and visit the many retail, service and professional business and community resources. The square at the corner of Main and Center features the Davidson County Historical Museum located in the old courthouse. Other places to see in the county are the Richard Childress Racing Museum for NASCAR enthusiasts, Denton Farm Park, Mrs. Hanes Moravian Cookie Factory, Childress Vineyards and Winery, Bob Timberlake Gallery, and the Dempsey Essick Gallery.
Info on the City of Thomasville
A decision in 1840 to pass a state tax to fund a railroad system through the area led to the founding of this community. Thomasville was established in 1852 and today has an estimated population of 25,400. It encompasses 11 square miles and it is well situated off of Interstate I-85. The city celebrated its 150th birthday in 2002.
The oldest remaining railroad depot in North Carolina is located in downtown Thomasville. Built in 1870, the restored structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and currently houses the Visitor’s Center.
Thomasville has a long history of furniture manufacturing. The best known site is a 30-foot replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair. The chair is located in the heart of downtown Thomasville.
The quaint town offers the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of big city life. The city is currently working on a revitalization project for the downtown area.
High Rock Lake
High Rock Lake is the second largest lake in North Carolina and is located just 9 miles south of the City of Lexington on Highway 8. The lake offers boating, swimming, skiing and fishing. Most of the shoreline is dotted with waterfront homes and cottages. Indian artifacts can still be found along the shoreline. In the past few years, the BASS MASTER’S CLASSIC, the world’s most prestigious fishing tournament was held here. The area is popular for year round residents as well as weekenders from Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte.
