Located in Davidson County just 9 miles south of the City of Lexington on Highway 8, High Rock Lake offers boating, swimming, skiing and fishing. Indian artifacts can still be found along the shore. In the past few years, the BASS MASTER’S CLASSIC, the world’s most prestigious fishing tournament was held here. The area is popular for year round residents as well as weekenders from Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte.
High Rock Lake is a manmade lake with approximately 360 miles of shorelines and covering almost 16,000 acres. It is located in both Davidson and Rowan Counties and is fed by the Yadkin River and the numerous smaller rivers, streams and springs. It is part of a 3 lake “chain” consisting of High Rock, Tuckertown and Badin Lakes. The lakes were constructed to provide hydro electric power to manufacture aluminum at a facility on Badin Lake. Construction of the plant and lake project was started in 1913 by L’Aluminum Francais, a French Company. In 1915 the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) bought the company and in 1916 produced its first aluminum at the plant located on Badin Lake. In 1917 ALCOA began work on plans for High Rock Dam and reservoir. High Rock Lake was completed and filled for the first time on April 14, 1928. For more information about Yadkin, Inc.’s (ALCOA’s) Shoreline Management Plan and Pier Permit Rules and Regulations, see their Website at

ooking at a map of High Rock Lake, you will notice an irregular shoreline and many branches of the lake. Abbotts Creek is very popular for skiing, boating and fishing. It offers two marinas, a private club, 2 public access areas and a deluxe campground (the boat and cabin rentals). Flat Swamp has some of the prettiest water on the lake with excellent skiing and fishing. There is a public access area with a boat ramp. Crane Creek is the home of the Boat and Ski Club which has become a gathering place at the lake on weekends. Due to the bridges and small boat mast, sailors will want to concentrate on the “river” and on the parts of Abbotts Creek, Swearing Creek, Crane Creek and Panther Creek that are on the “river” side of the railroad and vehicle bridges.
