History

An Irishman, Jacob Story, first settled in the area in  1756. In 1817, Joseph Kerner purchased the property and opened and operated an inn. The area became known as “Kerners Crossroads.”

In 1871, a decade after the civil war, the town incorporated.  At the time, there were only 147 residents but quickly grew to over 1,000 residents just two years later.  The catalyst in Kernersville growth began when residents built a section of the railroad line through the town producing opportunities for commerce and trade.  Ever since Kernersville has become a logistics center, combining rail, excellent road network and air freight at the nearby PTI airport.

Location

Interstate 40, Business 40 and Hwy 66 intersect through Kernersville.  It is an easy drive to the Piedmont Triad International Airport.  The growth of the town is driven by its location.  The city limits take up 17 square miles and the postal address 80 square miles. The estimated population in 2019 was 24,576.

Culture

The Kernersville Museum is located in the “Bellamy House” providing educational displays of local history and culture.  Revolving exhibits and a full-time director help visitors to realize the rich history of the area.  A railroad depot from 1873 on North Main Street showcases the appearance of a passenger train station, complete with a ticket counter and waiting area.

Korner’s Folly was built in 1878-1880 by Jule Korner, a grandson of Joseph Kerner.  His home has become a tourist attraction as a result of its unusual design.  The home features 22 rooms on seven levels.

Sections of downtown have homes listed on the National Register of historic places.  A walking tour of the area is available at Korner’s Folly.

Another key attraction is the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden located in the historic district of downtown.

The Factory a renovated 1887 tobacco warehouse is a 100,000 sq. ft. facility with retail shops and offices.

Recreational Activities in Kernersville

There is an opportunity to enjoy baseball, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, biking and walking trails in the parks and recreation centers located here.  The town has six scenic parks and a botanical garden.

The Fourth of July Park started in the 80s by a group of equestrians.  Today it is a 17-acre park with designated dog areas and has the only skateboarding park in the region.  The park also features tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic shelters.

Outside the city limits is Triad Park. The veterans’ memorial Carolina Field of Honor is situated within the park.  There is also a massive amphitheater, biking, and bicycle trails and a variety of shelters for family picnics and other amenities.

Rotary Park is home to The Kernersville Farmers Market Shelter.

The most extensive rec center in town is the 90,000 square foot Kernersville Family YMCA.  The facility includes two double gymnasiums, a state of the art fitness center, two indoor and outdoor pools, athletic fields and indoor and outdoor tracks.  A community pool is located in the YMCA and is a partnership of the Town and the YMCA.  The pool is used by all the public and private high schools.

The region is home to eight golf courses within a 20-minute drive from Kernersville.

High Rock Lake located in Davidson County is also about a 30-minute drive for enjoying water sports.

Triad Park and Carolina Field of Honor


Annual Festivals

Kernersville has become known for its music festivals.  The Spring Folly has music on two stages and is held the first full weekend in May each year.  This festival brings in over 30,000 people and is ranked the top 20 festivals in the Southeastern United States.  The Spring Folly also includes an art show, classic car show, carnival rides, and specialty entertainment, in addition to tasty festival food.

On the 3rd Saturday in August, the Honeybee Festival is held at 4th of July Park.  The event includes music concerts, crafts, food, ridges and activities for children.

Health Care

Kernersville has a full-service hospital, Kernersville Medical Center, which is part of the Novant system.  Opened in 2011, the facility is a state of the art medical and surgical hospital with 50 inpatient rooms, an emergency room, an intensive care unit, and surgical services.

Also, Cone Health Med Center Kernersville recently established an urgent care facility including many specialty practices.

The VA’s Kernersville Health Care Center opened in 2016.  The facility is a four-story regional outpatient clinic to serve those who served our country through the military.

Kernersville Employment

Besides driving into the larger cities for employment, Kernersville, NC has a vibrant business environment here.  The town benefits economically from the Norfolk and Southern rail line that comes through the town which serves industrial companies in the area. There are multiple health facilities including the Kernersville Medical Center, a full-service Veterans Affairs clinic and the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.  Besides serving the community for a variety of health needs, these medical facilities offer ample prospects for employment.

Other large employers in the area is a Fed Ex Distribution Center employing 550 people and the Deere Hitachi Construction and Machinery Corporation employing around 350 people.
